Hoarfrost — Winter Thriller Cinematography Lookbook

A DP's lookbook for a winter thriller: camera language, cold practical light, sodium night exteriors, recce photos, lens choices and a test-day plan.

Updated

This board is the working lookbook for Hoarfrost, a thriller set over one winter in a lake town in the north. The director of photography built it during prep, and it reads left to right in roughly the order the conversations with the director, gaffer, locations and colourist happened. The first column, Camera language, holds the one-page look document and the lens note. The page sets rules rather than moods: wides held long, a 35mm at eye height as the default, one handheld scene, no over-the-shoulders until the third act. The lens note ties those rules to real glass and real stops. A single film reference sits next to a whiteout photograph, with an arrow saying exactly what to take from it, so nobody has to guess why it is there. The second column is about cold practical light. Every source in frame is the source, so the pictures show garage tubes, a motel lamp, a dashboard glowing in a dark cab and a neon sign out in the snow, and the table lists each practical with its colour and how it is controlled. That table is what the gaffer works from on the day. Night exteriors get their own column because that is where most of the money and the weather risk sit. The note is a short set of rules, the clip of snow under a sodium head shows movement and colour at once, and a recording of lake ice at night is kept for playback on set. The recce column puts the location photos in one grid next to a table of sites, scenes and power, with a checklist of what is still open and a sub-cluster of the places that were turned down. The last column holds the palette, the grade note and the filed schedule for the camera test day, so the look gets proved before the shoot starts. If you are making your own cinematography lookbook, the useful habit here is to write decisions rather than adjectives, and keep each note next to the picture it is about. The look in a page

The idea

Hoarfrost is about people who stand still in the cold for too long. The camera does the same. It waits, it watches from a distance, and it only moves when someone makes a decision.

Framing

Wides first, and held. Characters small against white, often in the lower third.

35mm at eye height is the default. Nothing above head height except the two overheads at the lake (Sc. 34, 58).

Frame through things: frosted glass, a windscreen, a door left open. The cold sits between us and them.

Singl

Large metal grain silos with industrial machinery in foggy conditions.

Sites we saw and passed on, kept in case the ice or a permit falls through. Bergen Lake is the fallback for the shacks (Sc. 33–36): closer to base, worse horizon. The yard tracks cover Sc. 41 if the bridge permit doesn't come.

Practicals only

Every source in frame is the source.
- Tubes stay uncorrected. Let them go green; Ada holds them in the grade
- Sodium is 2000K and stays that way
- Every lamp re-bulbed 2700K tungsten, dimmer on each
- Fill is one 4x4 ultrabounce, never a lamp on a face from off-frame
- Room too dark? Add a practical in frame, not a light outside it

Lenses + format

- Alexa 35, 4.6K 16:9, 2.39 frame lines
- Zeiss Super Speed Mk III: 18, 25, 35, 50, 85
- The 35 is the film. 25 for small rooms, 85 only for faces through glass
- Angénieux 24-290 for across-the-ice, always locked off
- T2.8 day ext., T1.3–T2 at night
- No filtration by default. 1/8 Black Satin held back for the garage tubes if they bloom

Grade + LUT

Show LUT v2 from the first grade with Ada.
- Snow sits neutral grey: never blue, never paper white
- Skin cold but alive; keep the red in ears and knuckles
- Sodium stays orange. No teal-and-orange split
- Blacks lifted 2%, soft roll-off in the highlights
- Day ext.: a stop under, let the overcast sit heavy

Night ext. rules

- No moonlight blue. Night is sodium and snow bounce, nothing else
- Front St: 6 heads re-lamped 400W HPS (4 by town works, 2 faked)
- One 18K on an 85 ft condor, 1/2 CTS, lake wides only
- Snow reads 1.5 stops over the face. Expose the face, let the snow clip
- Haze only when it isn't snowing
- Wind over 30 km/h: the condor comes down
